Canvas of Connection: An Intergenerational Project with LaurenHill Academy and the Steger Residence

Intergenerational Art Project Brings Youth and Seniors Together

REISA, in collaboration with musician and multidisciplinary artist Louise Campbell, the EMSB, LaurenHill Academy, and the Steger residence, has launched an exciting intergenerational arts initiative that connects Lauren Hill Academy student volunteers with seniors at The Steger residence. This project, funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, blending storytelling, art, and culture, fosters meaningful exchanges between generations through monthly creative sessions.

In their inaugural session, participants shared stories about their favourite places. Memories came to life through a visual arts activity where participants recalled the colours and scenes of these cherished locations, translating them into abstract (and sometimes literal) sketches. From the Wild West to a Hollywood stage, imagined sunsets from books, and hometowns worldwide, the session showcased the vibrant imaginations and diverse experiences of everyone involved.

What’s Next?

December 9: Music and Movement

The next session will introduce participants to the lively Brazilian tradition of choros. Guided by artists Ariana Pedrosa and Louise Campbell, participants will explore handheld percussion instruments, create rhythms with their hands, and dance for those who feel inspired! Conversations will center around early memories, especially those connected to music.

January 13: Exploring the Hope Chest

Led by artists Mary Williamson and Louise Campbell, this interdisciplinary session will explore the tradition of the “hope chest.” A collection of household objects—ranging from teacups to tools, fancy clothes to workwear—will inspire participants. Participants will select items that resonate with them and share personal stories tied to these objects, reflecting on what they would place in their own hope chest or one for someone else.

Looking Ahead

Stay tuned for more updates and enjoy a sneak peek at some of the artwork created during our first session! While participant-focused media is pending release confirmations, the creativity and connection fostered in this project are evident in these shared creations.
