ELAN seeks a Communications Assistant

Duration: 16 weeks – November 25, 2024- March 7th, 2025 

Wage: 17.50 per hour, 35 hours per week, with some flexibility in schedule 

Language(s) of work: Excellent oral and written English and basic (working knowledge of) oral French

About ELAN

ELAN (English Language Arts Network) is a non-profit organization devoted to helping Quebec’s English-language artists connect with one another, with their francophone colleagues, and with audiences in Quebec, Canada, and internationally. Our members include artists and organizations representing many artistic disciplines and regions of Quebec. ELAN encourages an evolving Quebec identity that celebrates social, cultural, and artistic diversity.

Job Description:

This position will provide valuable experience for candidates considering a career in arts and cultural communications, marketing and promotion, especially in the not-for-profit sector. It will also extend ELAN’s capacity for outreach through our communications channels, and assist us in bringing attention to underrepresented groups within our membership base. 

The Communication Assistant will gain great insight into the Quebec English- language Arts community and have the opportunity to develop initiatives that will live on after they leave.

Working under the supervision of the Communications and Outreach Coordinator, with the oversite of the Director or Programing, the Communications Assistant will train and gain experience by assisting the Communication Coordinator carry out day-to-day tasks involved in meeting ELAN’s communication needs. This includes communication strategies relating to our Annual General Meeting, monthly newsletters, website maintenance, and promotion of services and initiatives for Quebec’s Official Language Minority Community (OLMC) on ELAN’s digital communications platforms and social media channels.

ELAN’s team approach to work, will allow the Communications Assistant to broaden their employability, and get an understanding of the different opportunities involves in cultural work.

Description of Tasks

Once completed on-boarding, and general training, the candidate will work on projects aimed at building their skill set and confidence:

  • Carryout an audit of our newly refreshed website and make recommendations for corrections and optimization
  • Provide communication support for ELAN’s many projects
  • Assist with all ELAN’s ongoing communication needs (newsletter, social media) 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a targeted social media campaign for ELAN’s $20 for 20 campaign and events aimed at attracting a large swath of the artistic community to the events  
  • Collect and curate content for our web page with links to articles of interest to the community.
  • Assist with membership communications through the renewal of all membership related promotion.
  • Assist in the implementation of the new strategic plan for ELAN’s communication department. 
  • Create and submit an end of term report, detailing activities, and including recommendations for future development.
  • Assist in ensuring all communications initiatives are in compliance with ELAN’s inclusion policy and privacy laws.
  • Assist in documenting ELAN events and archiving images 

Please note: This position is funded by Young Canada Works. As such, candidates must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; 
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
