AMI-Québec is Hiring: Care Champion in Schools

AMI-Quebec is launching a new project focused on young carers. A young carer is someone under the age of 25 who is affected by or cares for a loved one who has a chronic illness, disability, mental health or substance use issue and/or problems related to old age or a language barrier.

We are seeking a “Care Champion” to begin a pilot project in collaboration with two schools in Montreal, in the Lester B. Pearson and English Montreal School Boards. The project aims to better support young carers aged 5 to 17, and to raise awareness in the school community. A part time position (3 days per week), the Care Champion position may expand to full time at a later stage.

AMI-Quebec is a nonprofit that helps families manage the effects of mental illness through support, education, guidance, and advocacy.

Care Champion in Schools

3 days per week

The Care Champion will work both in person in schools and remotely (or at our office in Montreal).

In the first few months of the role, the Champion will:

    • Be onboarded, to become familiar with AMI-Quebec’s wider programs and philosophy
    • Undergo training, covering young carers statistics, global best practices, and existing materials and strategies for school interventions
    • Assist the Young Carers Coordinator and school representatives in designing the pilot and its evaluation measures
    • Work with school representatives and school board leadership to become acquainted with the pilot schools’ systems, determine timelines for project implementation and schedule activities

Once running, the Champion will be independently responsible for the pilot project’s activities:

    • Raise awareness (presentations in classes, parent information sessions and outreach)
    • Inform and help staff to accommodate young carers (deliver trainings, info sessions)
    • Be the first point of contact about caregiving for students, families and staff
    • Help young carers to navigate outside supports

A bit about you:

    • Lived experience as a young carer, when you were under 18
    • Experience working with youth
    • Familiar with active listening and mindfulness
    • Enjoy being part of a team but you are autonomous and self-motivated
    • Sensitive to ethnocultural and other diverse populations
    • Excellent English, written and spoken. A working proficiency in French is an asset but not mandatory
    • BIPOC candidates are strongly encouraged to apply
    • Training in family peer support work, social work, early childhood education, special care counselling, or similar fields, is an asset
    • Familiarity with DYP/DPJ is an asset
